ORIGINAL POST: Most couples spend a whole year planning every detail of their wedding and music, but only think of their wedding dance as an afterthought so that when the moment comes they find themselves in the uncomfortable position of shuffling around for an agonizing length of time (agonizing for both the couple and the guests who have to watch them).
The truth is that your wedding dance can be the highlight of the wedding for you and your guests. One of the most popular clips on youtube right now is of one wedding couple who really made their dance their own (and they were invited on the show ELLEN as a result).
As dance instructors, our favorite experience was choreographing a wedding dance to the song All I ask of You from Phantom of the Opera. We loved helping this couple achieve their goal of creating their perfect wedding experience.
But most couples come to us with no knowledge of how to dance together at all. Good dance instructors should work with you to build your confidence as well as your skills. The important thing is to think about your dance as you are thinking about your wedding. Also, do not trap yourself into a long-term contract with a studio. Look for teachers that can work with you and with the music you select (it will not help you to learn the waltz if your music is a foxtrot). We also find that most of the couples we work with choose popular music that does not fit into the traditional tempo of ballroom dance. Make sure that your teachers can work with you to dance to the song you have selected.
